After watching his parents die in front of him, Trent was left in a haze. For hours he just stared at the spot where they disappeared. Finally, realizing that they were gone he pulled himself away from the top of the bank and wandered into the surrounding forest. He wandered through the forest aimlessly until nightfall. He knew deep down that he was lost, but nothing mattered anymore. He was nine. Too young to have his own Pokemon, or to even have his license. Now his parents were dead and his nearest relatives lived in the far reaches of Jhoto. Not only that, but he had only met them once. Finally, well after sunset, he slumped down against a tree and immediately fell into a deep sleep caused by exhaustion.

The young boy's voice was lost in the thundering of hooves that was rapidly approaching. His family had come to the Safari Zone on vacation from the city life in Celadon City. His mom, Laura, worked at the department store selling accessories for Pokemon competitions. His dad, Justin, worked as a therapist in Saffron, the next city over.
They had taken this vacation to get away from it all, but they had strayed off the trail. Now, their young son was watching as a herd of Tauros were stampeding towards his trapped parents. His mother had slipped down a stream bank and couldn't pull herself back up. In an effort to get her out Justin also fell in. Now they were both trapped with no way to escape the herd of unstoppable beasts.
